A Sustainable Competitive Advantage Essay

Operations Management is a key component in the success of any ï ¬ rm. The textbook  outlines ten critical areas to focus on for Operational Managers–many ï ¬ rms have developed these one or two of these areas into a competitive advantage. One ï ¬ rm, Anhueser-Busch/InBev has successfully incorporated all ten areas of focus and developed them into a legacy of quality and a sustainable competitive advantage. This focus on Operations Managemnt has lead to Ab/ InBev’s reputation for quality, and their continued dominance as a global brewery. Design of Goods The design of goods/services deï ¬ nes a ï ¬ rm, and sets them up for success (or failure) in  the market. In order to design a superior product, ï ¬ rms must ï ¬ rst understand their customer— what their needs and requirements are. Anheuser-Busch/InBev has focused on developing a diverse portfolio of global brands to satisfy a myriad of customer needs; a few of their more recently-developed beers are actually based on customer suggestions and recipes. The AB/ InBev portfolio ranges from low-cost products such as Busch (which focuses on a costleadership strategy), while domestic brands such as Budweiser and Bud Light are a force to be reckoned with in the North American markets. Other brands such as Hoeegarden and Leffe appeal to craft beer consumers as well as global markets (a differentiation strategy). By customizing products to various consumer tastes, they are able to obtain greater market share worldwide. AB/InBev’s original beer, Budweiser, was developed in the 1800s by the company’s  founder, Adolphus Busch set out to create a beer that balanced ï ¬â€šavor and refreshment— something that everyone could enjoy. This understanding of customer needs, combined with a commitment to quality and consistency still exist in the company today, which contributes to the overall sustainability of the company. Managing Quality As mentioned above, AB/InBev makes sure to incorporate quality into their individual  products—by meticulously managing their supply chain, they are able to control the overall quality of input as well as their products. Their commitment to tradition is the basis for their commitment to quality; many of the ingredients they use while brewing today’s beer come from the same lineage as the ingredients Adolphus Busch used back in the 1800s. Since AB/InBev directly owns the farms where the hops, rice and barley are grown, by ensuring the quality of the ingredients, they ensure quality and consistency in each batch of beer. AB/InBev offers quality to consumers by offering an extensive line of products—they  improved on their Lime-o-Rita line by offering additional ï ¬â€šavors. There is manufacturing based quality in their products—each batch of Budweiser is brewed to the same standards as the last, thus ensuring that each individual bottle tastes as good as the last. Process and Capacity Design By maintaining a process-focused strategy, AB/InBev has created a sustainable  competitive advantage—their unique lineup of products all revolve around the same quality ingredients. Fewer inputs (hops, rice, barley, etc.) all distill down to a variety of quality products that AB/InBev uses to meet their customer demands. This high volume, low variety production method allows for the efï ¬ ciency needed to produce the mass quantities of product that AB/InBev demands. A simple visit to the AB/InBev brewery creates a clear picture of their commitment to the  product-focused strategy—their facilities are designed speciï ¬ cally to accommodate the variety of products they have created. This speciï ¬ city and simplicity lead to lower variable costs per unit, higher equipment utilization, and overall easier production planning. Although switching   production lines between products can be a bit of a hassle, the specialization of labor reduces lead time and setup costs for each production run. Location Strategy The main headquarters of AB/InBev are currently located in St. Louis, Missouri, where  they were originally established in the early 1800s. Although the merger between AnheuserBusch and InBev in 2008 could have easily meant that  headquarters would be relocated, moving production elsewhere would have been incredibly costly. Because of the company’s long-standing residence in the Midwest, many suppliers are also located in the Midwest. Relocating the brewery would have not only increased shipping/handling costs of the various inputs, but also the campus that AB/InBev currently occupies is now owned outright by the company—attempting to build a new production facility would have been a signiï ¬ cant outlay of capital. The brewery in St. Louis is certainly a well-known landmark within the city, but it is not  the only brewery that AB/InBev owns and operates. Because the demand for AB/InBev products is so widespread, the brewery operates 12 different brewing and bottling plants throughout the United States. These locations help ensure the freshness and overall quality of the product delivered to various markets nationwide, as well as help reduce the costs of moving product from manufacturer to distributer. Layout Strategy! Because AB/InBev offers almost 200 unique products, layout strategy is incredibly  important in keeping the company competitive—efï ¬ cient and effective use of space ensures that things continue to run smoothly. At the brewery in St. Louis, a couple of different layouts can be seen. Silos at the  entrance to the campus store the various ingredients needed to brew the beers, while outlying buildings double as ofï ¬ ce space and storage of other components (such as bottles, cans, labels, etc.). By using a warehousing/storage layout for certain items, things that are used most commonly during production are close by, thus saving on shipping and handling costs. The beer that is brewed in St. Louis is bottled on-site. The bottling lines follow a  product-oriented layout—for example, glass bottles for Bud Light are run through one set of lines, while cans of Bud Light are run through a separate set of lines.

12th Night Essay

To what extent? The majority of Shakespeare’s characters did not get what they deserved in the end, there definitely is a strong scent of injustice that hangs in the air around Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. This, however, does not mean that it made life harder for his characters. In quite a few cases, it actually leaves them better off. Nevertheless, this is not to say that they are not punished for their wrong deeds, sometimes in ways that are completely unfair. Shakespeare shows us painful truth of the injustice that exits within humanity. In the case of Malvolio, we are quick to act, but not to investigate. We also learn that love can fix many things, but it can also tear them apart, as we see with Olivia, Orsino, Sebastian and Viola. Also, as seen through the character of Antonio, bad things can be forgotten if a good enough deed replaces it. As many of us know, humanity is infamous for their willingness to judge and act against a person before they fully investigate the situation; Malvolio is just one example of this. We are aware that Malvolio did treat others in a derogatory manner, â€Å"Go hang yourselves all! You are idle, shallow things; I am not of your element,† – Malvolio, Act 3 Scene 4. He never actually incapacitated anyone; he never broke the law or strayed from his duties. He was simply just a spiteful individual and did not deserve to be imprisoned in a cage for however many hours of his life. I feel that this was an extreme measure and in the end, it may have inflicted more anger and discourtesy towards Sir Andrew, Sir Toby and Maria, reversing the entire effect their ‘plan’ was intended to make. When the truth was eventually exposed, and Malvolio freed after facing an invalid punishment, he was understandably furious, proclaiming, â€Å"I’ll be revenged on the whole pack of you! † – Malvolio, Act 5 Scene 1. Perhaps this was a harsh act of karma, all we know is that Olivia was quick to accuse him without further evidence, proving that for once and for all that humanity is unjust. Twelfth Night is a romantic comedy, and romantic love is the play’s main focus. Despite the fact that the play offers a happy ending, in which the various lovers find one another and are married, Shakespeare shows that love can cause pain. Many of the characters seem to view love as a kind of curse, a feeling that attacks its victims suddenly and disruptively. Various characters claim to suffer painfully from being in love. At one point, Orsino describes love miserably as an â€Å"appetite† that he wants to satisfy and cannot, Act 1 Scene 1; at another point, he calls his desires â€Å"fell and cruel hounds,† Act 1 Scene 1. Olivia more bluntly describes love as a â€Å"plague† from which she suffers terribly, Act 1 Scene 5. These metaphors contain an element of violence, further painting the love-struck as victims of some random force in the universe. Even the less melodramatic Viola sighs unhappily that â€Å"My state is desperate for my master’s love,† Act 2 Scene 2. This desperation has the potential to result in violence, as in Act 5 scene 1, when Orsino threatens to kill Cesario because he thinks that Cesario has abandoned him to become Olivia’s lover. Love is also exclusionary: some people achieve romantic happiness, while others do not. At the end of the play, as the happy lovers celebrate, Malvolio is prevented from having the objects of his desire. Malvolio, who has pursued Olivia, must eventually face the realization that he is a fool, socially undeserving of his noble mistress. Love, therefore, cannot overcome all obstacles, and those whose desires go unfulfilled remain no less in love but feel the sting of its absence even more severely. Sometimes in life, we can make up for our crimes, merely by doing respectable deeds instead. This is what Shakespeare demonstrates for us through the character of Antonio. We become conscious that Antonio’s past is shadowed with unlawful activity when he voices to Sebastian of â€Å"many his enemies in Orsino’s court,† Act 2 Scene 3. Nevertheless, he still follows Sebastian, showing courage and loyalty. He then defends Viola (Dressed as Cesario but identical to Sebastian) from Sir Toby and Sir Andrew, bringing himself to the attention of the officers, who recognise him from his shady past and drag him away. Yet it is when Orsino sees him and Viola takes Antonio’s side, reimbursing the favour he did for her, that Orsino concludes that Antonio is free to go, insisting that he is a, â€Å"Notable pirate† and wonders how he, â€Å"Hast made thine enemies? Act 5 Scene 1. So he is pardoned of all of his corrupt deeds, purely because he was kind and displayed courage and determination. As a result, it is quite clear that no one in Twelfth Night truly gets what he or she deserves. Shakespeare’s plays are just as unjust as the world itself, perhaps this is why we love to read and watch his works, we can relate to them. Twelfth Night has helped to show me just how one-sided life can be, but also that that unfairness can also work in my favour.

Ethics of Singapore Airlines Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Ethics of Singapore Airlines - Research Paper Example The present research has identified that Singapore Airlines has been accused of some unethical practices. In 2010, the company pleaded guilty for a price-fixing charge in front of the US Department of Justice and received a fine of 48 million US dollars. Airline’s portrayal of â€Å"Singaporean Girl† and recruitment practices are sexist and discriminatory. Furthermore, their promotion campaign asking customers to â€Å"fly with Singaporean Girl† contributes towards objectifying women and portrays the traditional stereotype of Asian women as submissive to males. The absence of whistleblowing practices and training also caused the company to suffer a scandal that involved an employee depriving the company of 35 million Singaporean dollars over a period of 13 years. Introduction It was on May 1, 1947, that Malayan Airways Limited (MAL) was incorporated, which would later undergo division into two separate entities of Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines System. In the process, the paper would present various examples and cases that would assist in making meaningful conclusions. Discussion Social Responsibility In order to save Harapan Rainforest, Indonesia, Singapore Airlines, in the fall of 2010, donated 3 million US dollars to the Harapan Rainforest initiative, which is looking after the restoration and conservation of the rainforest. These funds would be utilized towards creating a workforce which could prevent illegal logging of this low land rain forest, prevent damage from any fires and contribute to the animal species conservation programs. According to Singapore Airlines, these funds are just another manifestation of the fact that the company strongly believes in the restoration of forests since forests are the world’s chief carbon stores, in the absence of which climate change and global warming would become a graver issue than ever. In an attempt to become a more ethical corporate citizen, Singapore Airlines has supported the arts community especially in Singapore and other parts of the world, through various generous donations. Some of these donations have gone to reputable arts societies of Singapore such as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore Dance Theatre, Singapore Lyric Opera, and Singapore Chinese Orchestra. Furthermore, Singapore Airlines also takes great pride in the fact that it has served as the leading sponsor of various high profile exhibitions at the National Museum of Singapore.

The Darker Side of Marketing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

The Darker Side of Marketing - Essay Example This paper approves that the tobacco industry has used such studies to target the young and uninformed. They have used deceptive advertising as a result of these findings in the form of marketing ‘low-tar’ cigarettes. They have also used cartoon-like characters to appeal to the youth consumer. To their delight, this strategy indeed generated sales as planned without an ethical thought as to the dishonesty of such practices or that this practice was particularly disgusting as it applies to youth smoking. The marketing of filtered and low-tar cigarettes were planned to comfort smokers worried about the health risks associated with the habit and to impart this new product as an alternative to not smoking. This report makes a conclusion that Tobacco companies have routinely researched the smoking habits of teenagers and competed vigorously with each other to design products and their accompanying marketing strategies to ensnare a segment of the youth smoking market. When young persons see cigarette logos linked with their heroes, excitement, speed and triumph, they are likely to lose sight of the grim realities of smoking; death, disease and addiction. An addictive product doesn't take much to hook a new customer. For the tobacco companies, the expense of giving away free samples is negligible compared to the potential for long-term gains, especially from new young customers.

The British Economy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 6

The British Economy - Essay Example A fixed exchange rate system as the name suggests, is a system in which the country in question is striving to prevent the exchange rate of the currency to change with the change is balance payments of deficits. This is a system which needs other accompanying systems to make it work (Pitt, 2001). When this system is to be implemented, the government uses certain measures and implements some specific rules. Usually, these rules include the fact that when interventions in the foreign markets are made, there should be macro-economic adjustments so that the income which is spent on imports is reduced. Along with that, protective tariffs are imposed so that the number of imports can be reduced to a desirable level. This system also includes some rules in which there is a restriction on the amount of foreign currencies that can be bought (Barro, 2008). The reason why a fixed exchange rate is used is that it provides certain benefits for the exporters. The basic reason why the exporters benefit from a fixed exchange rate is that there is greater certainty of the rates and the income which would be ultimately received from the export. The exporters have to take lesser risks and can guarantee results that would be more or less near to the things which are predicted (Pitt, 2001). The fixed exchange rate also enables the domestic firms and their workers to make them more disciplined. They enforce the idea that the costs of the company should be kept under a strict balance because that is the only way in which the company is able to compete in the international market. When the domestic firms are watching their costs, the government is able to control inflation and that in turn would control the interest rates (Barro, 2008). The years 1876 to 1913, were the ones in which the rate of a currency was established on the basis of that currency’s comparative conversion into an ounce of gold. This

The Concept of American Music Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

The Concept of American Music - Essay Example music traditions, which have also essential effects on American music. In the paper we analyze all the implications of the statement ‘Rock and pop music in the United States is African-American music’ and investigate the issue of American music origin and its present trying to point out whether it is determined mainly by African-American tendencies and whether there are other crucial factors, which affect American music to a considerable extent. American Music Controversy and Diversity It is commonly accepted that African music has made a significant influence on development of overall American pop and rock music beginning with 19th century (Nicholls 123). The most major effects could be easily discovered if consider spirituals, slave songs, jazz, blues, soul, and rock and roll music tendencies. Originally all these integral parts of American music culture were developed by African slaves in the US and only later they became common within all American social and racial s tratums. However, another inseparable part of American music, country music, is supposed to emerge due to both African and European impacts as well as Hawaiian and notably Native American traditions. When searching for arguments that support or disprove that American music is affected significantly by African motives, it is worth to consider American folk music first of all, which brought to life American popular music later (Nicholls 47).Originally, it comprised such styles as gospel and blues, which have undoubtedly strong connections to West African culture and further have been modified and extended due to English, Spanish and French motives (Nicholls 135). Generally, American folk music involves such traditional instruments as drums, shakers, which are included to percussion group of instruments, and flute, all of which have strong associations with African traditions. However, it is also worth to mention that British tendencies had also a significant impact on American folk mu sic development enriching it with such techniques as drone, which is constantly repeating motive through the whole theme, and numerous ballad songs. Moreover, complex rhythms, or polyrhythms, which are associated with American music, are also inherent characteristics of African music and were integrated into the US music traditions by black people (Nicholls 109). At the same time African culture seems not to bother a lot about melody and this tradition American music derived from European counties. Another fact that confirms strong relationship between African and American music concerns the issue of syncopation, which is heavily used in modern American pop music. Syncopation means that common rhythmic accent is moved from strong to weak beat and is an original African invention. Another initially African feature, which is clearly presented in American music, is about call and response technique (Nicholls 47). The method implies that several musicians play their phrases in such way that one of them sounds like a response to other parts. On contrary, there are some important British tendencies, which affected American music and directed its further development. 1960s are associated with British invasion in the US music and presented times when American blues and blues rock musicians were influenced significantly by mainstream music tendencies in Great Britain. Reificaition Case Essay Example for Free

Reificaition Case Essay Wikipedia defines reification as â€Å"(Lat. res thing + facere to make) n. the turning of something into a thing or object; the error which consists in treating as a thing something which is not one. Hypostatization, treating an abstract entity as if it were concrete, is a case in point†. In Marxist terms, it is the consideration of a human being as a physical object, deprived of subjectivity. According to Marxists, this is one of the pitfalls of the capitalist system because in such a system the laborers and their work are not valued to their proper extent. Their work is treated as a commodity and is valued according to the unpredictable needs of the market. This concept is closely tied to the Marxist idea of commodity fetishism which Wikipedia describes as â€Å"an inauthentic state of social relations, said to arise in complex capitalist market systems, where social relationships are confused with their medium, the commodity.† Marxist writer, Georg Lukà ¡cs, writes thus: The transformation of the commodity relation into a thing of ghostly objectivity cannot there ore content itself with the reduction of all objects for the gratification of human needs to commodities. It stamps its imprint upon the whole consciousness of man; his qualities an abilities are no longer an organic par of his personality, they are things which he can own or dispose of like the various objects of the external world. Simply put, Marxists criticize capitalist systems for stripping the human person of his social nature. He is transformed into a commodity or a product. One’s labor is transformed into money which is in turn used to purchase the products of other people’s labor. Although this may facilitate the exchange of goods, the problem of the system lies in the fact that because of this abstraction, the use-value (the actual usefulness of the object) is oftentimes totally different from its exchange-value (the value of the object in the marketplace). For example, a person who creates a hammer (which has a variety of uses) will be paid less than a person who makes jewelry (an object which has less use than a hammer). The value given to the work of the laborer is incommensurate to the work and effort that he made in order to produce the good. How can reification be avoided? Marxist measures against reification have proven themselves to be ineffective (including complete control over the market and standardization of wages). This is because these measures tend to remove the element of competition from the formula, thus, causing production to suffer instead. An alternative mode by which reification is avoided is through the respect of human rights. According to John Locke, each person has the natural right to life, liberty and estate which must be protected by the government. These rights must ensure that each person shall be given his due. By treating persons as individuals with human rights and dignity, people will be treated as an end and never as a means. The theory of human rights has been upheld and accepted by most of the world and are embodied in international instruments and conventions, most notable is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the field of labor and employment, modern societies have integrated this idea of human dignity by setting minimum standards and conditions to be strictly followed by employers under the pain of appropriate sanctions should they be defied. For example, there could be a law saying that any employee who works beyond eight hours in a single day shall be given additional overtime pay. Another instance would be a law that would lay down a minimum wage based on the living standards and conditions of the locality where the worker belongs. By recognizing the human dignity of every person, reification is completely obliteration because persons are then given the respect they deserve. They are no longer treated as cogs in the machinery of production but are considered partners in the enterprise. By holding that each person deserves to be treated with dignity, they are esteemed as subjects never objects, and will be given their due.       Bibliography Lukà ¡cs, Georg. 1967. Elements of packaging Essay Example for Free

Elements of packaging Essay There are six components of packaging which consumer was asked to rank according to his preferences. Consumers have ranked the most preferred components by 1 and least preferred by 6. The data analysis for this ranking has been done by calculating the total of the response in each category. The least total will be the highly preferred attributes because it would have received first ranking more than any other. One the basis of the same we can see Colour is a component that received maximum of first rank (20), second rank (19) and third rank (13) and hence its total is least. Whereas Text is the least preferred attribute as it has received six rank 30 times and its total is maximum of all the attributes. The second attractive components for respondents were graphics followed by shape, size and material. Figure III. 11: Elements of Packaging When the preference ranking of the components of packaging was compared on the basis of gender an interesting fact came into the picture. For both the categories of respondents the preferred factor was Colour. But the following factor has been different in each case. Female on one hand preferred graphics after Colour on the other hand male preferred shape after Colour. Qualitative Research Qualitative research was based on the interview conducted by the researcher to the employee of Mark Spencers Ms. Trudi Barnes, who works as a packaging developer. I. i. a. Interviewing procedure The interview was based on structured questionnaire with majority of open ended question allowing the respondent think and respond on each and every question. The interview was scheduled on the post lunch hour as the crowd in the store is least during this period. Researcher noted down each and every response of the respondent with the help of pen and paper. Interview took approximately 45 minutes to complete. Respondent has been very cooperative for the interview session. It started with the general introduction about the research, its aims and objectives. The respondent has been told about her rights to withdraw from the interview if she feels uncomfortable in any way. She has been clarified that this data will be used for this particular study only and if in any case it is being utilized for any other purpose she would be informed and her consent would be taken for that. I. i. b. Interview questions The packaging developer’s job is to find out and understand the packaging requirement from the buyer and brief the internal design studio about the same. She has been converting the client specifications to the design specification and working as a link between the consumer and designer of the organization. Design studio looks at all the criteria of de3signing from the customer needs to the art work complications, design set and corporate guidelines. The packaging Developer than gets the designs from them and ensures that the packaging is appropriate for the product from technological point of view and pass it to the printer which actually prints it. As respondent states, â€Å"It’s the suppliers who pay for the packaging and we just set the design for them. † For the respondent her job is quite interesting. Her area is mainly the Menswear its accessories Footwear and Kids wear its accessories. Accessories like hats, cufflinks, watches hankies. The Colour and design is decided only by the design studio. In the month of February itself she was about to brief the autumn packaging out of which some will go into Christmas corporate design. It goes worldwide to find out the trends develop a design. † Her statement â€Å"I dont know exactly why the Colour of MS bags was changed to purple this Christmas where as last Christmas it was red. Colour palette for an occasion is picking out Colour for carrier bags the store deco. But my packaging was in Red with White Snow Flakes on it. She provides inputs to the design studio on which they work as her statement â€Å"When I put in the briefing then the design studio develop the look for Menswear/women swear but they both are treated differently as the menswear is more masculine women’s wear in more feminine. It is similar Colours but with slight difference. When asked whether or not packaging influence consumers she immediately responded â€Å"Packaging does influence customers. † She further elaborated that â€Å"They (consumers) have always challenged us to be clearer on our swing tickets. We got shout that our Natural material and fabric should shout the benefits. (Complaints like product benefits should be clear should provide all product related information)† She talked more about swing tickets which are the little card hanging of the garment. According to her it is important that the customer should get the right information about the product. She explains that impulse purchase will be different in different areas of retail organization. In her area Hankies are one of the impulse purchase made by the customers since it is quite traditional gift. She explains further â€Å"believe or not lots of hankies are sold during Christmas time. Eg: 2 packs are launched for Fathers Day. I am launching Card dispensers which will be full of hankies. We start with outstanding value hankies then the novelty new designs are coming out as well. † when asked about relationship between festivals and their products she responded â€Å"I am not too clear with the question regarding the relationship between festivals our products all right so products like cufflinks in Menswear will be in red pink or even a heart shape during Valentines. † According to her gifts are divided into various segments like corporate and personal apart from the routine segments like men’s women’s and so on. â€Å"Display box corporate design promotions are going on in the store deco. Pink Red is the Colour for these valentines especially on foods a lot many things are there. † She responded on the importance of graphics and Colours that each of these factors is equally important. According to her, â€Å"Both Colour graphics are equally important. Gift items which are put into boxes are there in Menswearso I think probably its the design/graphics that attract the customer the most the customer feels yeah I could buy this. it puts a gift idea into the customers mind. † According to the respondent success can be attached to the packaging of the product but not the failure as failure of any product will be due to product itself not its packaging. Success or failure of a product is obviously measured by the sales. Organization put constant effort to understand the reasons of drop in the sales and looks look at everything the product, packaging and what its saying on the packaging. We plan constantly. During the festival season organization focuses on various product categories on which sales is expected. Menswear mainly focus on Christmas, Valentines and the major one is the Fathers Day. Respondent agrees to the changes in Colour used for packaging during special occasions. For instance on Fathers Day the Colour is changed but she doesn’t control the decision of the Colour. It’s the design studio. Design studios show us some scenes but they do the research from design trends.

A Clean Well Lighted Place English Literature Essay

A Clean Well Lighted Place English Literature Essay During the 20th century, literature contained many different typed of writing themes. One theme in particular was place. The use of place as a theme was utilized especially well in many of Ernest Hemingways works. Hemingway was one of the greatest American writers and journalists of the 20th century. One of his more famous works is his short story, A Clean, Well-Lighted Place. The title is self-explanatory towards revealing the possibility of place being one of the themes of the short story. Ernest Hemingways A Clean, Well-Lighted Place begins slowly with two people having a conversation but ends up displaying an important theme of place in the clean, well-lighted bar atmosphere that is seen. In many works of literature, a certain place establishes a sense of lifestyle. Place gives reader a sense of automatic comfort and further knowledge of the plot. A huge basis upon what makes place important as a theme in literature is the relationship it has with the characters. When readers are first given the setting and sense of place that the characters are living in, readers can automatically depict whether or not the characters adjust or fit in with the society and environment. Depending upon the characters personality and the personality of the place, tension and apprehension can result from a distortion with each other. However, if a character adjusts with the society in the story, messages can be implicated and readers can associate better with the authors writing style. An example of this can be seen in Annie Proulxs short story, Brokeback Mountain. The two cowboys correlate well with the cold, mountainous work environment that Proulx places them in. These two men use this mountain as a place of leisure that they can enjoy and get away to. The mountain is significant to the theme because of this. Thus, by creating the appropriate settings and places for the events to take place, the tone that authors wants to attain, will be brought out effectively and will therefore demonstrate the connection between the atmosphere and the characters in the story and show in general, how it has exaggerated the characters and their personalities. Hemingway wrote many confusing works of literature that have been thoroughly debated for years. This short story definitely follows the pattern of confusion that Hemingway brought to readers. The story begins with discussion of a drunk, old man that visits this bar and cafà © every night. It appears to be conversation between two waiters, one young and young old, about the drunken mans attempt at suicide a couple nights before. The two waiters argue about closing the bar. The younger waiter is angry and wants to go home, while the older waiter is more patient. Overall, the story is perplexing because it does not seem to have a point, but further examination of the dialogue and setting can divulge a message. In many of Hemingways works readers are forced to use the dialogue of the characters to determine what is actually going on. The difficulty presented by the story derives from the fact that in only a few instances does Hemingway identify the speaker (Gabriel 539). Although Hemingway uses dialogue as a theme, place is most definitely one of the most important premises he implicates into his stories. In A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, Hemingway gives us a cafà © which is clean and well lit, but generally has a lonely vibe. This cafà © represents more than just a place for the old man to get drunk, but a place that he can resolve his loneliness. Hemmingways solemn tale is about defeating the late night loneliness in a bright bar. The drunken man drinking brandy endures it and so does the elder waiter. However, the younger waiter cannot comprehend being alone because he most likely has not been very forlorn in his life. He brings up a couple times during the story that he wished to go home to his wife, yet the old man and old waiter have no wives to go home to like he does. Ernest Hemingway does not feel the need to give much detail on the setting.    The reader knows that it is late and that these men are in a cafà ©. The main character is sitting in the shadow and he is drinking brandy. Hemingway leaves out details from the setting but does make it clear that this cafà © is, like the title suggests, clean and well-lighted. He only states important aspects of the setting demonstrating that details are nothing, or nada. Through his writing Hemingway implies that this old man feels that little details in the world mean nothing. When the older waiter asks the younger waiter why this drunken man had tried to commit suicide a week before, the younger waiter simply answers Nothing. He has plenty of money (Hemingway 17). In the young waiters mind this old man has everything. Obviously, this old man feels that things like money are nothing and thus not worth living over. Ernest Hemingway, through the lack of details, demonstrates that details are nothing a nd therefore not worth inputting, strengthening the nada theme. Each night I am reluctant to close up because there may be some one who needs the cafà © (251). The waiter who speaks these words realizes that his cafà © is more than just a place to eat and drink. The main character of the story is the elderly, deaf drunken man who spends every evening at the cafà © until it closes. Place is used to help the reader understand the old mans loneliness and the comfort he receives from the cafà ©. Hemingway uses direct description, visual and auditory clues, and sense imagery to establish the setting and to develop this understanding. Hemingway uses direct description at the very beginning of the story to establish the setting of the story for the reader. It was late and everyone had left the cafà © except an old man who sat in the shadow the leaves of the tree made against the electric light. In the day time the street was dusty, but at night the dew settled the dust (Hemingway 15). This conveys a sense of solitude and peace which surrounds the o ld man. More importantly, this description gives the reader a feeling for the loneliness which has engulfed the old man. The use of shadows and light, along with solitude, gives the sense of loneliness. The older waiter argues that they should have allowed their customer to stay, that being in the cafà © is not the same as drinking at home. He explains that he is also one of those who likes to stay late at a cafà © . . . . With all those who do not want to go to bed. With all those who need a light for the night (Hemingway 18). He does not want to close, since there may be someone else who needs the cafà ©. When the young waiter says there are bodegas open all night, the other points out that the bright atmosphere of the cafà ©s makes it different. This detail demonstrated by Hemingway truly reflects the importance of the cafà © as a theme and its relevance with the characters. The visual and auditory clues the author uses are necessary in understanding why the old man continues to return to the cafà © each night. Turning off the electric light he continued the conversation with himself. It is the light of course but it is necessary that the place be clean and pleasant. You do not want music. Certainly you do not want music (Hemingway 23). It is essential that the cafà © be well-lighted to offset the old mans dark and lonely life. In addition, music would only be a distraction from his thoughts and a disruption of the solitude which quiet brings. Finally, through Hemingways use of sense imagery, the reader is able to understand why the old man visits the cafà © at night. the old man liked to sit late because he was deaf and now at night it was quiet and he felt the difference (Hemingway 22). Evening brings a sense of serenity to the old man. The day time distractions, even for a deaf man, are replaced by evening solitude. This allows the old man to withdraw and reflect on the loneliness of his life. It is clear that Hemingways use of direct description, visual and auditory clues, and sense imagery to establish setting help the reader to understand the old mans loneliness and the comfort he receives from the cafà ©. The old man is first seen as very lonely and in search of solitude and quiet. The setting, and the use of several literary mechanisms, however, further develop this old man and enable the reader to not only see his loneliness but feel and understand it. After the younger waiter goes home, the older one asks himself why he needs a clean, pleasant, quite, well-lighted place. The answer is that he requires some such impression of order because of a nothing that he knew too well. He begins a mocking prayer: Our nada who art in nada as it is in nada (Hemingway 23). He then finds himself at a bodega which is a poor substitute for a clean, well-lighted cafà ©. These places which bring light to the characters also bring a light out in readers. Hemingway presented a place where not only the old man went to, but also his readers could relate to because of the solemn feelings sometimes felt. He goes home to lie awake until daylight may finally bring him some sleep: After all, he said to himself, it is probably only insomnia. Many must have it (Hemingway 24). Hemingways past may have given him reason to write this story and also reason to use this certain place. He was quite the drinker which gave him firsthand accounts of being in a bar and the atmosphere it provided. He may have used some of his own life experiences to give himself inspiration towards what this deaf, old man might have been feeling. Hemingways complex relationship with women he married four timesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ (Pukas 1). He most likely felt loneliness a lot of his life because of the many relationships he was in and out of. This most likely resulted in his heavy drinking, and the clean, well-lighted bars that he went to would give him comfort. Many writers use different ways of approaching place as a theme. Some writers use the place with the characters personalities, or some use the place as a higher power. In this short story by Hemingway, he uses visual imagery to depict this fresh, bright environment to readers in similar ways that other writers would. Writing visually takes talent and uniqueness, and like any talent there are methods that made Hemingway stand out from the others. Creating a visual image gives the reader that place where they want to go on their minds virtual journey through a short story such as A Clean, Well-Lighted Place. Imagery gives the reader that picture in their minds eye as a reference to place with the written words. ..Everyone had left the cafà © except an old man who sat in the shadow the leaves of the tree made against the electric light (Hemingway 15). In this instance, Hemingway was more visibly descriptive about where the old man was sitting. The shadow indicated that the old man may have sat in the dark for a reason, such as loneliness. An artist, who can write well, weaves those images into the story line, taking the reader on a journey where the imagery leaves you satisfied with the ride when the last page is turned and the gateway or book has been closed. The images stay with you long after. Hemingway is not your typical 20th century writer because he truly had his own style of writing. His works were complicated for some readers but revolved around strong messages. Every person can relate with at least one of his short stories because of his usage of the places that his readers have once been to and experienced themselves. Understanding the importance of place as a theme in literature takes research and exploration of many different writers. Ernest Hemingway uses settings and places on a whole other level by elaborating with visual imagery and toying with readers senses. A Clean, Well-Lighted Place isnt just about the loneliness of an old, deaf man, but also displays characteristics that can be felt by all. Hemingway shows readers that sometimes it takes a clean, well-lighted place to get away from the dark, loneliness we feel when we are down.

The Godless Constitution Essay -- essays research papers

The Godless Constitution   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When some people here the words â€Å"the godless constitution† uttered the shrill up their noses and get very defensive. Kramnick and Moore address this idea of the United States Constitution being godless. They speak about how America has misinterpreted views and how society would benefit from an understanding of what the Constitution stands for and how to correctly use it. They strive to help America understand that politics driven by religion and faith would do the most damage to the political agenda. They also emphasize that America created the Constitution was created to make a person’s religious standing irrelevant to hold office or voice a political opinion. They cover many topics addressed by the American public when trying to decide on the placement of God in our Constitution. They are writing to help Americans gain a greater understanding of what our forefather’s intended when writing the Constitution.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  To understand why these two men are writing about The Godless Constitution, an approach on what they believe are America’s views is needed. In the first paragraph of the first chapter they state that they believe America argues over foolish things. They have come to the conclusion that Americans misinterpret the intentions of the constitution in providing a government for the people of the United States. They ask the question, â€Å"Is America a Christian Nation?†. They do not condemn religion of any sort but merely state that one God is not in the constitution. One main focus is on the founders of the document. A major point made is that even though most of the founders were Christian and lived by Christian principles, the envision was of a godless government. Their reasoning behind this idea was not of irreverence but confidence in religion too serve civil morality without intruding into politics. They believe in letting humans exercise their free will to believe in a God or to reject the idea without their decision affecting their role in government.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  They refer to the one time God is mentioned in the constitution, Article 6. This merely states that â€Å"no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States†. This one statement is used to declare that America stands as a unity and full... ...ted States to gather knowledge on how to regard religion in our government. They give a timeless solution to an understanding of what our government is trying to establish. They propose the conception of America using this awareness of which the object was designed instead of seeing one-sided views to our nation.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  As citizens in a democratic government an understanding of the reasons laws were created help gain knowledge about how society is to proceed. This government protects people from politicians who stand for issues on religion. The Godless Constitution acknowledges the large population of Christians that created our Constitution. It does recognize they held the religious values strong while making the laws that govern our country. It also encourages the idea that they desired a godless government to protect the rights and freewill of mankind.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Kramnick and Moore write not to solve problems of society, but to help the public gain awareness of our forefather’s intentions when creating our government. The Constitution is godless, and for good reasons. It is up to the individual to decide whether or not our nation is.

Gothic and Feminist Elements of The Yellow Wallpaper -- Feminism Femin

Gothic and Feminist Elements of The Yellow Wallpaper      Ã‚  Ã‚   Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" has been interpreted in many ways over the years. Modernist critics have applied depth psychology to the story and written about the symbolism of sexual repression in the nursery bars, the chained-down bed, and the wallpaper. Genre critics have discussed the story as an example of supernatural gothic fiction, in which a ghost actually haunts the narrator. But most importantly, feminist critics (re)discovered the story in the 1970s and interpreted it as a critique of a society that subjugated women into the role of wife and mother and repressed them so much that all they could ever hope to be was an "angel in the house." Keeping in mind that "The Yellow Wallpaper" can be - and most often is - interpreted as a feminist text in this way, we must also recognize that it holds its own in the Gothic genre. In fact, Eugenia Delamotte claims that "women who just can't seem to get out of the house [are] the most basic subject of Gothic plots" (207). The Gothic has always been and still is a genre that picks up on the concerns of its day. In the same way that postmodern Gothic (Don DeLillo and John Crowley, for example) concerns itself with late twentieth century technological issues, Gilman's Gothic of a century ago was very concerned with the plight of women in American society. When we recognize "The Yellow Wallpaper" as both a feminist treatise and a Gothic text, we can begin drawing conclusions that might not be obvious had we overlooked this dual nature of the story. Gilman's narrator - who appears to be suffering from postpartum depression - has been diagnosed by several male physicians, including her husband, and... ... Gothic and feminist. It is both classically Gothic and an expression of the position Gilman would like to see women achieve in society. This duality is quite powerful. The Gothic trope of concealed objects is what enabled Gilman to best express her feminist views on the status of women in her suffocating society. Her nameless narrator is representative of all American women who have lost their identity to oppressive and unfulfilling domestic roles.    Works Cited Delamotte, Eugenia C. He does not play for the team.He is only concerned with his own records and his money. He was a poor farm boy from North Carolina, and now that he is in the major leagues and playing in the outfield for a famous and well-loved team he thinks only of how it will profit him. He considers his siblings at home in North Carolina and thinks about how to pay for their schooling as well as pay off the mortgage on his family’s home. No one else matters. Before the end of this book the protagonist, Highpockets McCade, learns the importance of being a team player and that th e praise of your team and friends is much more important than the cheers of the crowd or a good story from a sports writer. The book didn’t change my thoughts much, though I enjoyed the book. It seems to me that the lessons he learned should have been a part of his upbringing and his parents should have instilled better values in him to begin with. The turning point in his life, the incident that causes him to see the light, is an accident involving a boy. It is not McCade’s fault but he becomes friends with the boy and it changes his attitude and his life as he starts to become the team player that his teammates want and need. In a move that is so predicable that it seems right out of Hollywood, his team makes it to the playoffs and he makes the play that wins the game and the pennant. The story is dated and juvenile but has good values and is worth the reading.BibliographyTunis, J.   Highpockets   New York: Scholastic Book Services 1948

Foreign Market Entry Essay

9. How will entry into a developed foreign market differ from entry into a relatively untapped market? Marketers face many issues in the decision making process in order pursue the many different possibilities concerning foreign and domestic markets in terms of expansion and structural change. These companies seek ways to improve capital by expanding into different markets, investing, and enhancing the quality of life with their products in foreign markets and the pursuit of such a move could either be adverse or positive to the company in nature. Initially, there are steps taken and research conducted by the company to ensure the route they area attempting to take will prove to have a positive return, just as long as their plans are in tune with, or along the same lines as, the market they are attempting to interact. As stated in the text â€Å"Comprehensive decisions must be made regarding key strategic choices, such as standardization versus adaption, concentration versus dispersion, and integration versus independence† (Cateora, gilly, graham 306), this means both sides must have cohesion prior to the decision making process to ensure the products, or services, offered have a positive reaction to the culture they are attempting to attract. Among other issues faced by the companies the opportunities presented by outside or foreign, markets are not always in sync with those of the companies, for example, as the text states â€Å"it may be necessary to change the objectives, alter the scale of international plans or abandon them. One market may offer immediate profit but have a poor long-run outlook, while another may offer the reverse† (Cateora, Gilly, Graham 313), this shows the primary difference between developed markets and undeveloped markets because where the resources are lacking within an untapped market they strive and do not provide speed bumps and hinderances within a developed market. The difficulties that lie with conducting business within an undeveloped market further extend also due to the primary issues faced dealing with a well developed market, those challenges include cultural and physical distance due to the â€Å"difficulties of doing business across time zones† (Cateora, Gilly, Graham 313), and these difficulties have been wholly defined and extensively pacified within a developed foreign market. Since there must be a gain from expanding to these foreign markets, the companies work in attempting to unify with the needs of the market to support the expansion may at times exceed the benefits gained. The problems within an undeveloped foreign market could prove too unpredictable to be able to support such a move by an outside source attempting to gain access into the market, among other issues to include foreign investment, and tariffs the expansion could be more costly than it is beneficial. 12. The text discusses stereotypes, ethnocentrism, degree of economic development, and fads as the basis for generalizations about country of origin effect on product perception. Explain each and give an example. Country of origin effect is described as the â€Å"influence that the country of manufacture, assembly, or design has on a consumer’s positive or negative perception of a product (Cateora, Gilly, Graham 363), essentially it is the realization of the products country of origin and the consumer’s translation of the revelation in terms of continued support of the products or services. This realization leads into the generalizations mentioned within the text these generalizations aslo allow the consumer to pass judgement based on their primary ideas or assumptions of the country of origin which are generally bias and culture based either negatively or positively motivated. A stereotype is a common image or judgement of someone or something, as noted within the text, these images are â€Å"formed by experience, hearsay, myth, and limited information† (Cateora, Graham, Gilly 363), generally an idea or bias o forced upon another. Since Most consumers have an idea or notion of other people in other countries these notions have a tendency to find ways to define their products as well, but the ideals and cultures shared within another country could oppose those of others that may not want to support the sell of their products and services. Stereotypes become important within consumer markets because consumers may want to know where and how their products are being manufactured. This also blends into the idea of ethnocentrism where one may believe their culture is superior to another and decide that foreign products have no place in their country and this can influence the opposition of outside products and services. Some stereotypes also have a overall perception of products and services because of where they come from and the premise of what they represent in terms of industrialization and developing, most developing countries have stereotypes against them because of this. This is the practice of dividing similar products into an â€Å"ours† versus â€Å"theirs† circumstance where the home country depends and sides with locally manufactured products and services. Fads are typically products that tend to be in the now and have no home of origin, they simply come and go with time. These stereotypes all have implications concerning generalizations about country of origin simply because every consumer has an opinion on where and how the products and services come about. These opinions become a part of the product life cycle because they determine the positive and negative outcomes of theses products within different regions. Cateora, Philip R., Mary C. External and Internal Environmental Analysis Essay

An external and internal environment scan is necessary in developing a strategic plan for an organization. Longmont Housing Authority (LHA) needs to assess their internal and external environment to see a full view of their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, and trends. In this paper, an internal and external competitive environmental scan for Longmont Housing Authority will be performed. An analysis of the most important external environmental factor in the remote, industry, and external operating environments is included. The most important internal strengths and weaknesses of the organization will be identified. It includes an assessment of the organization’s resources. Finally, the organization’s competitive position and possibilities will be assessed. External Environment Scan The strategic management model shows the external environment as three interactive segments: the remote, industry, and operating environments (Pearce & Robinson, 2011, p. 13). Economic, social, political, technological, ecological, and international environments affect how LHA formulates their strategic plans. In the economic environment, the company is affected by inflation, interest rates, population, and so on. The threat of depressed economy is always a factor in the success of Longmont Housing Authority. Their processes and strategies can be modified to fit the changes in the economy. Due to the changes in social factors such as beliefs, opinions, lifestyle, and preferences, the company can see the underlying trends, threats, and opportunities. An increase in population in Boulder County increases the demand for affordable housing. This is an opportunity that is open for LHA as they continue to do grow and development their organization. The increased threat of a growing population and lack of  affordable housing is an opportunity for the organization to find potential funding sources to expand their portfolio. Their new project is due to break ground next month. This is a 62 unit affordable housing for seniors. Flood victims will have priority on the waitlist for this property, due to the fact that the majority of the funding for this project came from a state flood recovery program. The increasing population is also a good opportunity for the organization because they will be able to justify the need for future housing projects that will be desperately needed in the future. Factors that more directly influence a firm’s prospects originate in the environment of its industry, including entry barriers, competitor rivalry, the availability of substitutes, and the bargaining power of buyers and suppliers (Pearce & Robinson, 2011, p. 110). However, LHA does not have to face tough competition in the housing industry. They are threatened by the threats of funding being pulled by Housing of Urban Development (HUD) or other private investors, who may find affordable housing an investment risk. Internal Environment Scan The organization has been gaining competitive advantages since their launch in 2014 of bringing the property management in house, opposed to hiring a 3rd party to handle the property management. These changes have improved staff development, improved agency financial stability, has streamlined processes, and as a result, they have developed effective policies. Because there is such a demand for affordable housing and very few investors wanting to get involved in this industry there is not much competition. LHA has been able to develop good working partnership with other Longmont agencies, to include the senior center, the police department, city council, Mental Health Partners, and other non-profits that assist the homeless and low income population. LHA’s Competitive Position and Possibilities Longmont Housing Authority is in a good competitive position due to the mentioned strengths and opportunities in the internal and external environment scan. It is highly possible that they will continue to lead in the affordable housing industry because of the focus they are providing to research and development. They can also avoid the threats and eliminate  competition by having experienced staff, and focusing on employee development. Conclusion Longmont Housing Authority is affected by the external and internal environment factors. Their strengths include their property portfolio (product) and processes. They are investing in development and they have a couple major housing projects in the works. They are threatened in the industry because of the threat of lack of funding and strict government regulations. If they will continue to push their initiative in discovering new ways to fund their projects, they can maintain or even improve their current performance. References Pearce, J. Sovereign Hill in Ballarat is a classic example of 'staged Essay

Sovereign Hill in Ballarat is a classic example of 'staged authenticity, outline some of the challenges that the tourism operator faces in trying to commercial - Essay Example Sovereign Hill is a multidimensional attraction that depicts the Australian town of Ballarat, around the mid-nineteenth century, about ten years after the discovery of gold in 1851. The attraction offers an excellent example of a â€Å"living† museum, â€Å"presenting the mining and social history of Australia’s gold rush era† (Buhalis & Costa, 2005: 209). The township is spread over sixty acres of land, has around sixty buildings, 300 costumed staff, 200 costumed volunteers and around 40 horses. The gold rush museum promotes visitor participation and authentic experience through role playing, interactions with characters, and the buildings and artefacts. This is supported by a modern orientation centre which familiarizes visitors with the background of the gold rushes in the 1850s, with the help of audio and video. The tourist destination offers several interesting experiences including activities, events, festivals and a sound and light show â€Å"Blood on the Southern Cross† with spectacular lighting and special effects (Buhalis & Costa: 209). Sovereign Hill in Ballarat is a classic example of â€Å"staged authenticity†. This paper proposes to outline some of the challenges faced by the tourism operator in trying to commercialize the tourist destination, while at the same time attempting to maintain an authentic experience for the visitors. A tourist destination is not only a geographical place, it is an integration of products, services, natural resources, built environment, artificial elements and information that attracts a number of visitors to a place (Bieger: 8). The stakeholders are: actual and potential tourists, public administration, tourism operators, conductors of local private tourism activities, operators of non-local tourism activities and the host community. The main objective of tourism operators is the integration of different resources to provide facilities and activities based on policy. Tourism should â€Å"meet the needs of different

Business Plan for Wal-Mart Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words

Business Plan for Wal-Mart - Essay Example There are another 1309 stores in 10 other countries. These prices are obtained through the massive buying power of the firm and tight contracts with the suppliers, by the relatively low average wages paid to employees, by the streamlined business model and by continual fine -tuning of strategy. This attracts customers: Wal-Mart commands about 30 per cent of the US market for household staples such as toothpaste and sells 15 - 20 per cent of all CDs, Video and DVD. It is now becoming a force in book retailing as well. The firm was started by Sam Walton, who focused on locating large stores in rural areas while rivals built in cities and suburbs. The typical new Wal-Mart I now a 'Supercenter' that sells groceries and general merchandise in a store with an area of about four football fields. Wal-Mart has about 1400 of these supercenters in the United States. Wal-Mart has a great impact on suppliers and consumers. Due to the huge demand of Wal-Mart stores, suppliers are bound to stick to it only. Consumers get all the household items at a relatively low prices. To get the goals of any organization in certain intensity there are some issues involved. These issues, consists of necessary business, technology and human factors, are called Critical Success Factors. Firstly, a company has to focus on its business environments and secondly, it must be examined that what kind of risks have to face during the implementation cycle of business strategy (Aram, 1976), because the CSF is very much reliant on business's position. Several other CSF can be identified for specific circumstances. It is necessary that the basic features of the business like cost, quality of the product, services will not be affected negatively after entering into the marketplace Company must maintain a solid and comprehensive strategy of business The business of the company must have a complete support of its top management The infrastructure of the business must be complete and comprehensive The employees of the company are well trained Company's pricing policy not affected by its business The expectations of the customers must be taken care of Personal and 1-1 attention to all customers Strategic Planning: The strategic choice really consists of answering questions about competition - that is how the firm will compete to achieve its mission and goals (Daft, 1989). While these decisions are important, strategic decision makers often pay less attention to the 'with what will we compete' issue, resulting in poor strategic decisions (Galbraith & Kazanjian, 1986). For example, Pepsico in the 1980s acquired the fast-food chain of Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut in an effort to increase its customer base. However, it failed to recognize adequately the differences between its existing workforce and that of the fast-food industry as well as its ability to manage such a workforce. One recent study in the United States of 115 strategic business units within Fortune 500 corporations found that between forty nine and sixty nine percent of the companies had some link between Human Resource Management and the strategic planning process (Fisher & Dowling, 1999) however, the level of li nkage varies and it is important to understand the different

Implications for teaching Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Implications for teaching - Assignment Example In that interview, the artist revealed his passion and dedication for arts. As the interview progressed, Charlie Ross employed various techniques that enabled James reveal more detail as well as stay within the confines of the topic (Leslie 56). In particularly, Charlie Rose used skills such as gesturing using hands and nodding head to encourage James to reveal more details. At some point, Charlie Rose smiled to signify that the point was well taken. A part from gesturing, Charlie Rose also phrased questions for James to ensure that he fully understood the question. Another aspect that stood out was the strategies he used to encourage dialogue throughout the period of interview. He employed the use of thought provoking questions that influenced James to critically think, analyze, and together with evaluate all facts before answering. In the event, dialogue ensued. As this was not enough, Charlie Rose in most of his question tactfully invited two answers for his questions. This was a master class strategy as anyone capable of providing two answers for the same question proves that he/she has an in depth understanding on the topic under discussion (Leslie 56). In learning, proactive approach is vital for the learners to understand fully the concepts. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the instructor to ensure that the learning process is as active as possible. In particularly teaching arts to students should be as interactive. The best way of achieving this is to involve the student in dialogue, where the instructor asks relevant questions tactfully to enhance the rate of understandability of the concepts. In addition to this, the instructor should at all-time ask questions that require two answers after teaching a concept as this will evaluate the extent at which the concept has been internalized by the learners. In this regards, dialogue is the key

International Trade Operations in Egypt Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

International Trade Operations in Egypt - Essay Example The paper tells that Egypt happens to be the most populated Arab nation. It also happens to be the second most populated African Nation. Most of the population of Egypt is concentrated in the big cities like Alexandria and Cairo and in and around the Delta of the Nile Valley. The population in the rural areas in Egypt is on the decline because a large number of Egyptian populations are migrating to the urban hubs to assess a better life style and to benefit from the economic development taking place in these urban hubs. Egypt could be classified to be a well educated nation with its literacy rate being 71.4 percent. In Egypt education is free right up to the university level and it is compulsory from age 6 through 15. The long standing Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak had to resign following large scale political protests in the nation, predominantly led by the young people. In the year 2004, the Egyptian government initiated large scale economic reforms aimed at privatizing the los s making public sector units and rationalizing the tariffs and taxes. Egypt experienced a commendable economic growth, resting at 7 percent till the year 2008. However, with the onset of the global economic crisis, the economic growth went below the earlier 7 percent mark. Considering the recent, widespread political protests in Egypt, the rate of economic growth could be expected to remain low for the time. However, it could reasonably be assumed that Egypt is gradually moving towards a democratic, parliamentary form of government. With the initiation of the political reforms, the Egyptian economy could favorably be expected to align further with the Global economic trends and Practices. Slide II Egypt is not only the home to a fast growing population, but, the positive thing is that a majority of the Egyptian population comprises of young people and the aged constitute a miniscule of the Egyptian population. It is a fact corroborated by commonsense that young people are usually mo re open to new ideas, ways of doing things, products and services. Besides, young people are usually more informed about the global trends be they political, economic or culinary. Also considering the large size of the population that mainly comprises of young people, Egypt will have to import more food products to feed it. Going by the fact that most of the Egyptian farming and diary is concentrated in the Nile Valley, which comprises of a meager arable land, not capable of producing enough food to feed the large Egyptian population, it could well be expected that in the times to come, Egypt will have to rely on the outside sources to feed its fast growing population. Also, going by the concentration of young people in the Egyptian population, in the times to come it could safely be assumed that this relatively young population will exhibit a marked preference for foreign foods and culinary delights. In that context, it is a propitious time for the Content Cow Diary to export its p roducts to Egypt. If it forays into the Egyptian markets right now, it could pragmatically expect to consolidate its position in the Egyptian markets, in the times to come. Slide III International trade to a large extent is determined by the free interplay of demand and supply and the economies of scale that varied nations command in the context of specific products. If one looks at the GDP of Egypt, one could easily see that the agriculture sector contributes a meager 14.4 percent to the national GDP (CIA The World FactBook, 2012). In contrast, the other pillars of the Egyptian economy that are industry and services sector contribute 39.5 percent and 45.8 percent respectively to the national GDP (CIA The World FactBook, 2012). Thus, it will be quiet realistic to assume that the agriculture sector in Egypt is not well developed and modernized and could not be expected to churn out enough to be able to feed
